The Story So Far

Welcome to 'The Story So Far.'

This page will hold the links to the books and chapters of our ongoing adventures. There is also a link to the time line - the table header is a link to this time line - which is a very brief summary of events and the dates upon which they occurred.

THE PROPER NAME INDEX

Globe

Of course new material is appended to the current chapter as the game goes on. This will continue until the current chapter is about 25 pages long, or there is a more natural break in the story line to warrant beginning another chapter.

The current chapter is denoted by the YELLOW colored cell in the table above. If you read the current chapter to the end today, tomorrow that same link may contain more of the story. Earlier chapters, however, should be finished and fixed. The older the chapter, the more likely all mistakes have already been weeded out.

In fact, if you see any mistakes or errors, I'd appreciate you dropping me a line describing it and its location. The preferred method is to copy and paste the sentence where the error appears into an email to me, and immediately after the error, place the correction inside parenthesis, like this:

Chapter 14

He didn't know weather (whether) or not to go up the hill.

Thanks ;-)

Email The GM Your Comments (Send Praises, Critiques, Complaints, Suggestions, Ideas, Corrections, or Submissions).

Links beyond the yellow colored chapter may be broken or not yet exist, or lead you to dead ends.

And in case you missed it, the brief summary time line that is the header for the chapter table is a link, so you may see the time line by clicking on it. Or, you can simply use this link.

Time Line Of The Story So Far

Dear Players,

However convinced you may be of what you've written, please know that it is incumbent upon each player to reread their own posts, and the posts of each player once they have been published in The Story So Far. Why? The GM will often include additional facts or information within your own posts. The GM tires to maintain the integrity of each player's own work, but inclusions are often necessary to tell the whole tale, and frequently misunderstandings your characters would not have made - that clearly you have written - must sometimes be edited out and corrected.

To that end, please know the emails you get are NEVER official, but only become official when they are published to The Story So Far. In short, rereading the posts in The Story So Far will greatly benefit your understanding of the game.

Furthermore, a close comparison between the The Story So Far and your own email posts will frequently demonstrate differences in tense, punctuation, or style. The GM would appreciate it, therefore, if players took note of these differences and adopted the GM accepted style of tense, punctuation, and style, or other small differences on that order. Thank you ;-)

Dear Readers,

You might notice - and perhaps even slightly be annoyed - that each new story segment may recap portions of previously read material, or perhaps cast a different perspective on the same events that have already been covered. This is normal for this type of play.

It may, in fact, seem like they are backing up, skipping ahead, or jumping around in time rather than following a clear, concise, narrative in time.

Unlike a single author who can write the story from one perspective, this narrative could conceivably examine the same scene from as many perspectives as there are players, or counting NPCs, possibly any number of vistas.

Thankfully, however, it doesn't usually happen that the reader is forced to cover the same ground nine or ten times over - two or three, if that, is about as bad as it gets, and once is most often the case.

After the players get the hang of it, one description will usually do the job, with each player striving to go forward and build on prior events rather than merely recapping them first. This will come from trusting that the reader is paying attention, so there is no need to recap an event that happened as briefly as the last post. Even answering a question doesn't require one repeat that question first, since, in all likelihood, the readers have just read it seconds before and are simply waiting for the response. As you can guess, such a recap could tend to be annoying and is therefore often totally unnecessary.

Even when the players do backtrack a little, it is sometimes interesting to see these different perspectives, and rather than cull them out and force one author's take on it - and perhaps shorten the story so it reads more like a novel - since this work is not a novel, nor meant to be - that will not be done. Therefore, one will find they sometimes are rereading slightly different aspects of the same event.

Players are encouraged, of course, to push the story's narrative forward, and only restate, recap, or retell prior events the GM or other players have written about if they are important, or different enough from their character's unique perspective, such that it will benefit the reader to have those reminders.

When all is said and done, hopefully, The Story So Far will hold a narrative worthy of one's time, and it will be an enjoyable read, particularly from the stand point of readers who have tried PBEM, or gaming in general, and know what must have gone into its creation.

With that said, I hope the reader will enjoy our little story, and I thank you all for your interest in our little game.

- JimGM.
